The Sunday Snapshot | January
Happy Sunday, let me tell you about the things in media I've been loving lately.
Hello, happy Sunday and welcome to The Sunday Snapshot, a new blog series where I just give you a snapshot of the recent media I've been enjoying. From music and television to film and books, here's what I've been loving lately. Thank you for being here with me and let me know if you like any of this stuff too!
š§ LISTENING TO:
Push Back by Jetty Bones - Spotify | iTunes
I started listening to Jetty Bones somewhere around 2018-2019 and I've gobbled up anything she released ever since. I actually even connected with her on IG during quarantine and I am pretty sure I sent her a few of my enamel pins! Sheās a pretty cool person and I love the way she pairs fun, upbeat melodies with melancholic, relatable lyrics. My favorite from this album is Taking Up Space but my favorites from other albums include No Lover and Clear Honey.
Letter Blue by Wet - Spotify | iTunes
In 2017, I heard the song Move Me and I felt sick over how much I loved it. As someone as long winded as I am, I always appreciate someoneās ability to be succinct and powerful at the same time. I anxiously awaited their 2018 album Still Run and I loved it just as much but in 2021, when Letter Blue came out, I was truly blown away. It is surreal and strange but polished and cohesive in a way that makes for a truly encapsulating listening experience. The album is a no skip album for me but if I had to choose favorites, Far Cry, Only Water and Larabar are at the top of the list.
š READING:
Your Blood, My Bones by Kelly Andrew - LIBRARY | AUDIO
Rachel has been begging for me to read this so the time has come! I was thrilled to see it was available at my library and the audiobook came through quicker than the digital copy so I am currently listening. At 20% I am feeling dread, intrigue, and morbid curiosity - all my favorite things to feel while reading a YA, paranormal fantasy.
Come Closer by Sara Grann - PURCHASED | eBOOK
This is a short horror novella that I have seen on several folksā pages so I finally decided to grab it. Iām currently 18% in and I am enjoying the writing. It is reading very quick and the rumblings of something nefarious starting to creep in around the edges has me gripped.
Goddess of Filth by V. Castro - PURCHASED | eBOOK
So I actually finished this last year but I havenāt gotten to talk about it enough!
āFive of us sat in a circle doing our best to emulate the girls in The Craft, hoping to unleash some power to take us all away from our home to the place of our dreams. But we werenāt witches. We were five Chicanas living in San Antonio, Texas, one year out of high school.ā
I devoured this and it read very quickly, unfolding in familiar but surprising ways and I canāt wait to read more from this author. āļøāļøāļøāļø
š¼ WATCHING:
The Lost Boys (1987)
My uncle recently came to spend a couple of nights with us so we had a movie night. Knowing my deep love of vampires, he has been talking about this movie for as long as I can remember so we finally sat down and watched it together. It was not something I wouldāve expected to love and yet, here I am, reblogging Lost Boy fan edits on Tumblr. I am just a girl, yāall. It was fun and weird (and very queer coded but I didnāt bring that up with my uncle) and from here on, it is yet another beloved piece of vampire media for me to be insufferable about.
Wicked (2024)
I FINALLY WATCHED IT! As someone who had never experienced Wicked in any form but also loved The Wizard of Oz and musicals in general, this was a big win for me. From the songs to the dance numbers to the cast to the set designā¦ consider me a fan. If I had to nitpick, Iād defer to the pacing/length but a long time well spent isnāt necessarily a problem, is it? No, I agree. Catch me holding space for this movie/soundtrack for the rest of my life.
Nosferatu (2024)
Speaking of vampires and movies that will be engrained into my personality moving forward, I saw Nosferatu and loved every single slurping, wheezing minute of it. I included the original film in my Horror Movie Must Watch video a few months ago so clearly, I was going to be excited for this new adaptation. I literally skipped to the theater and was giddy as the opening credits rolled. It was dark, disgusting, beautifully shot, weird, gothic and just exactly what I wanted it to be.
